Reading Critically
What is Critical Reading?
Critical reading is when you analyze a text in order to find the truth behind the words. Critical reading is most relevant when the writing is made to persuade you.
4-Step Critical Reading Strategy:
1. Skim - To look over parts of a text to gain a quick overview.
2. Reflect - Figuring out your own views of the text, rather than that of the author's.
3. Read - This requires a writing tool, i.e a pencil, highlighter, marker, etc. Underline or highlight what words and/or phrases catch your eye.
4. Evaluate - Evaluate what you have read by asking yourself questions like Is the author's evidence relevant to the issue? and Are any of the author's terms vague or ambigious?
